On Monday, Dec. 9, Amid Ismail, dean of the Kornberg School of Dentistry at Temple University, received the 2019 Globy Award for Education Leadership from the Global Philadelphia Association.
According to the association, the awards “honor leaders whose work has elevated the status of the Philadelphia community on the global stage.” Ismail was recognized for the many collaborative programs and research projects he has spearheaded to better meet the needs of society’s underserved populations.
“The Greater Philadelphia Region is brimming with globally minded individuals who have made immeasurable contributions to our international reputation,” said Robert McNeill, chair of the Global Philadelphia Association’s board of directors. “It is the Global Philadelphia Association’s privilege to honor these local leaders who have raised the profile of our city not just in the eyes of fellow Americans but in the eyes of the world.”
Ismail has served as the dean of the Kornberg School of Dentistry since 2008, during which time he has transformed the dental care of patients in Philadelphia and the surrounding communities. He also led Temple Dental through two successful accreditation reviews in 2011 and 2018 and has made strides in modernizing the school to be an example in advanced technology and education.
During his tenure, he has hosted dental faculty from the Middle East and collaborated with Greater Philadelphia Health Action, Inc. to create the GPHA, Inc. Medical Suite at Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry, the first federally qualified health center in the country to partner with a major dental institution to provide medical care integrated with dental partners.
“The 2019 Globy Award for Global Education recognizes the position of the Kornberg School of Dentistry and its faculty, staff and students in promoting education of students from diverse cultural backgrounds,” said Ismail. “It is a milestone for our dental school as a promoter of Philadelphia and as a bridge-builder among diverse communities.”
