A Message from Amid I. Ismail, Dean
The 20th century brought with it a wave of scientific and technological advances that have drastically changed the practice of dentistry for the better. In the 21st century, we face not only technological advances, but also an emphasis on an integrated model of dental and health care that focuses on achieving broader health outcomes for our patients. The Kornberg School of Dentistry is playing an important role in shaping the future of the practice of dental care by preparing our students to lead this era of unprecedented change.
We are investing in our faculty, who comprise an unparalleled asset of intellectual capital and commitment upon which our programs are built. Our faculty ranks include experts in general dentistry, prosthodontics, endodontics, periodontology, orthodonics and oral surgery. We are engaged in several international searches with the intent of attracting additional faculty members among the best the academy and the profession have to offer. These searches spread across all dental specialties, and we look forward to the talents and skill sets each new faculty member will bring to add to our legacy of first-class education and patient care here at Temple Dental.
Technology, facilities and services
The very best teaching tools and physical infrastructure are equally vital to preparing our students for the demands of the rapidly changing practice of dentistry and providing the best care to our patients. Having recently completed a total renovation and upgrade of our clinics, we are moving forward to establish an onsite IV sedation center. This project will enable us to provide more complex procedures comparable to those done in private practices and hospitals across this country. This year, we are in the first of two phases of introducing a digital dentistry laboratory, equipped with state-of-the-art CAD/CAM (computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing) technology. This technology represents a bold new direction in our profession, and our students will have hands-on training with the latest materials and equipment.
Scholarships and increased opportunities for students
As we invest in technology and faculty, we are also committed to ensure promising students and future dentists are less constrained by mounting educational debt. Our goal is two-fold: (1) to reduce the amount of money our students need to borrow to finance their dental education and (2) to inspire students to achieve academic and professional excellence. Our new scholarship award program will significantly strengthen our support to students, awarding nearly $800,000 this year alone. We hope to build our student aid resources with the continued investment of our alumni and other benefactors.
We have also increased the size of our incoming classes to 140 to provide opportunities for more students to pursue their dental degrees. The Temple Dental degree has always stood for the very best in dental education, especially in clinical training, and we are pleased to help meet the strong demand from top students in Pennsylvania, across the country and from around the world. This, too, will expand the impact of Temple Dental in the global practice of dental health care.
Our unwavering commitment to our community
In the midst of embracing and creating change in dental practice, we must not forget that serving our community must remain a top priority. We have partnered with several local organizations to make sure the residents in our community understand we are here to provide the best dental care available at reasonable prices. Recent community outreach events have brought hundreds of new patients for assessments, exams and radiographs, and to develop a treatment plan of services they will receive as ongoing patients. With our growing patient population, our students have extraordinary opportunities to perform a full range of procedures in a large modern dental practice model and contribute to greatly improved healthcare outcomes of the Philadelphia region’s population.
The future of dental health care is bright, and Temple Dental will play a big role in shaping the changes that are ahead. We are the future! Join us!
